Tips for Applying Bed Liner on Your Own

According to experts, the best choice among the truck bed liners available today is the spray-on bed liner. For many, this is not arguable since the product effectively adds a protective covering to all the truck bed parts that should be covered with a protective coating.

A spray-on or paint-on bed liner covers dents and scratches and makes the truck bed waterproof and skid-proof. It also provides your truck with aesthetic appeal, as it can make your pickup truck look brand new.

Applying a bed liner on your own

If you are confident that you can apply the bed liner yourself, no one can stop you. However, it is still a good idea to know the steps beforehand and have the equipment and materials ready to work continuously without any hindrance.

Be sure to use the right kind of product, such as Durabak bedliner paint, which you can apply with a brush or roller. You can even spray it on, provided you have the equipment. Choose a prepared bed liner paint kit, so you have all the materials you need.

Prepping the vehicle

The first thing to do is to thoroughly clean the bed of your truck and see to it that it is completely dry. Only apply the paint when the weather is sunny. Clean the bed with the soap recommended for washing your car. You should see that car wax or any other protective product is removed from the truck bed’s surface by using a solvent cleaner.

Remove rust particles and fix the holes that you find. Doing this prep work ensures that the bed liner will perfectly adhere to the clean surface.

Protect the areas that should not be coated with the liner. Securely cover these areas with plastic or blue painter’s tape to ensure that the paint will not seep through.

Use the recommended sandpaper (80 grit) to remove anything that sticks out while roughing up the entire surface to ensure proper paint adhesion. Clean the surface once again to remove particles left from sanding. Using a blower effectively removes every tiny particle of dirt.

Applying the bed liner paint

Protect yourself from paint fumes by working in an area with proper ventilation. However, it is not advisable to work in an open-air location, to prevent the paint’s premature curing.

Once you are sure that the truck bed is ready, open the paint can and stir the content well so that the rubber granules are suspended in the mixture. Apply the paint using the method that you prefer. If you are using a roller, pour some paint on the roller tray and apply the paint using smooth motions. Use a paintbrush for the hard-to-reach corners. See to it that you put the lid back on the can to prevent the paint from drying. Stir up the paint material you have on the roller tray.

Allow the first coat to dry for around two to three hours before applying the second coat. After applying the second coat, allow the bed liner to dry for 24 hours. However, it is best to allow the paint to completely cure for at least five days before using it for heavy work.

A paint-on bed liner lasts for a long time. If you are applying it yourself, ensure that you have the right tools and truck bed liner you use is easy to handle.
